Jakarta. The Indonesia Fashion Chamber presented its "Neo in Style" special fashion show at Neo Soho in West Jakarta on Sunday (10/09), to coincide with the first anniversary of the shopping mall.

The show featured ready-to-wear collections by 10 IFC members, as well as creations by 10 students of the Susan Budihardjo Fashion School (LPTB Susan Budihardjo).

"The IFC truly encourages its members to create ready-to-wear collections," IFC national chairman Ali Charisma said during a press conference. "We believe ready-to-wear [collections] are a barometer of a country's fashion industry.

Through ready-to-wear collections, fashion designers can truly develop their styles, as well as their business acumen in the industry."

The IFC currently has 11 chapters in major Indonesian cities, with more than 200 members.

The fashion show opened with the "Water" collection by students of LPTB Susan Budihardjo.  The collection features clean-cut women's dresses and outerwear made of scuba and bubble wraps.  Hand paintings of ocean waves and water splashes adorn the items.

Bridal wear designer Phangsanny also launched her first ready-to-wear label, "Terbuai," which means "lulled" in Bahasa Indonesia.

"I feel that I can truly express myself when designing ready-to-wear collections," the designer said. "In ready-to-wear collections, I can imbue my designs with a myriad of Indonesian traditional textiles and also target a wider market segment."

Phangsanny's debut collection themed "Nyungga Mbuhang Humba" ("I Love Sumba"), was inspired by the designer's recent visit to the island in East Nusa Tenggara.

"When I first arrived in Sumba, I immediately fell in love with the island, the people, the culture and the textiles," the designer said.

Phangsanny's ready-to-wear collection features elegant evening dresses adorned with bold prints of tribal Sumba patterns, as well as jackets and boleros made out of handwoven textiles from the island.

Muslim fashion designer Feby Ayusta was inspired by the late-autumn scenery of Japan for her fall/winter 2017 collection titled "Koi No Yokan" ("Love at First Sight").

The collection consists of simple, easy-to-wear pieces in quiet shades of khaki. Discreet beading and crinkled mesh fabric, which symbolize the first snow falling from the sky, embellish the items.

Surabaya-based designer Yunita Kosasih took her inspiration from the delicate paper art by Dutch artist Peter Gentenaar for her "Harmonious Chaos" ready-to-wear collection.

"For me, [Gentenaar's] works seem to be so chaotic, and yet beautiful and harmonious at the same time," Yunita said.

Yunita created chic cocktail dresses made from patchworks of lurik, or Javanese handwoven textile, in earthen hues.

"Lurik has a rich variety of colors and patterns," Yunita said. "For me, it's like a symbol of Indonesia's diverse cultures and traditions."

Some of Yunita's dresses are also embellished with high collars made of pleated chiffon, while tassels dangle from the hemlines.

All the items presented during the fashion show will be on display in the bazaar at Neo Soho until Sunday.

"The works by Indonesian designers are actually on par with those of international designers," said Ali, the IFC national chairman. "But we do need the support of local shopping malls to provide us with retail space to showcase our collections."
